First visit with a new pet

1. What vaccines does this pet need, and on what schedule, given how we live?
2. What parasite prevention do you recommend for this area, year-round or seasonal?
3. What body weight should we aim for, and how does this diet look to you?
4. What is normal for this breed or age that might otherwise worry us?
5. When should the next visit happen, and what will it include?
6. How do we reach you after hours, and which emergency clinic do you recommend?

Vaccine appointments

1. Which vaccines are due today, and which are optional for our lifestyle?
2. When is each next booster due, and what proof will I get today?
3. What side effects are normal in the next day, and which ones mean I should call?
4. Does anything given today have waiting-period implications for boarding or travel?

When your pet gets a diagnosis

1. How confident are we in this diagnosis, and what else is still possible?
2. What happens if we treat, and what happens if we wait?
3. What should improvement look like, and by when?
4. Which specific signs mean it is getting worse, and what do we do then?
5. Is this likely to recur, and can we reduce the odds?
6. Would you refer this to a specialist in any scenario? Which one?

When starting a new medication

1. Exactly how and when is this given — with food, spaced from other meds, until gone?
2. What do I do if a dose is missed or vomited back up?
3. What side effects are tolerable, and which ones stop the medication immediately?
4. Does this interact with anything else my pet takes, including supplements?
5. Do we recheck or retest after the course, and when?

Senior pet checkups

1. Which trends should we start tracking between visits — weight, water intake, mobility?
2. Is any of this slowing down aging, or is it something treatable?
3. Should bloodwork happen more often now, and what would it catch early?
4. What pain signs do animals this age hide well?
5. What would you want to know sooner rather than later at this life stage?

Costs and follow-up

1. What will today plus the follow-up plan cost, all-in?
2. Are there staged or lower-cost versions of this plan worth discussing?
3. Which parts of the estimate are essential, and which are nice-to-have?
4. Can I get the discharge instructions and estimate in writing?

How to actually get answers in a short appointment

Choose three to five questions, not twenty-eight — this list is a menu. Open with your highest-priority question rather than saving it, take notes or ask for written instructions as answers arrive, and repeat the plan back in one sentence before leaving: so, drops twice daily for ten days, recheck if the shaking persists past Friday.
